Job Description

Lead the technical expertise on the control algorithms and calibrations of vehicle driveline systems in order to meet all performance targets and requirements from the customer as well as GKN. 

Detailed Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Functional Software requirements analysis
    •  Analyze software requirements based on the top-level customer and system requirement documents to ensure that the customer and internal specifications are being met for the program
    • Review system requirements at the start of the program in order to verify the system can meet each requirement
  • Cross-Functional team activities
    • Lead and facilitate discussions between cross-functional teams including the Controls, Software and Calibration groups
    • Lead and participate in discussions with external teams (customers and suppliers)
    • Provide technical assistance and feedback to the controls and system engineering teams on system integration and testing
    • Work closely with the functional safety team to determine the scope of the functional safety concept from a systems level and create test cases to meet functional safety requirements
  • Implementation of new algorithms
    • Propose new ideas and features to the controls team which may be later developed into core algorithms which will improve our products in terms of system performance.
    • Design and demonstrate new control algorithms to current and potential customers.  
  • Vehicle development plan and testing
    • Work closely with the calibration and verification group to define test cases which are used for verification of various feature
  • Software and Calibration release
    • Integrate internal and customer calibration releases including all required documentation
    • Support planning, review and approval of calibration and software releases
    • Conduct peer reviews with calibrators prior to releases
  • Problem analyses
    • Actively investigate and analyze issues and fault codes reported internally and from the customer.  Work with the various internal teams to track these issues and help them with the closing of these issues
  • Development Trips and Travel
    • Plan and support development trips to check the functionality and robustness of new algorithm features in real world conditions
    • Travel during winter and summer months to support cold and hot weather testing to test tracks in Upper Peninsula, Michigan and Arizona
    • Occasional international travel

Formal qualifications required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Automotive engineering or Computer science

The ideal candidate will need to be someone who can deliver new ideas, concepts, designs, and assist in the development of new algorithms and integration for next generation of driveline control products

Previous experience required:

  • Fundamental understanding of the different protocols which are used in vehicle communication networks (e.g. Flexray, CAN, CAN-FD,  etc)
  • Specific understanding of at least two implementations of the vehicle communication networks (e.g. General Motors’ Global A and Global B communication architectures)
  • Thorough understanding of vehicle dynamics as it relates to the ride and handling of a vehicle
  • Knowledge of FMVSS regulations and what impact they would have on the performance trade-offs of a vehicle
  • Has prior experience leading an integration team through all aspects of development
  • Able to interprete customer requirements and translate that into a level of vehicle performance which pleases the customer
  • 3+ years with exposure to vehicle testing / evaluation / controls development
    • Limit handling certification is beneficial but not mandatory
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics & familiarity with mechatronic systems
  • Ability to work independently and within a broader group with vehicles and system components
  • Experience in software and tools:
    • Matlab/Simulink
    • Vector CANalyzer, CANape, ATI-VISION, CRETA
    • Dyna4/AmeSim/CarSim
    • Vehicle bus architecture (CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, Ethernet, Flexray)
    • OEM vehicle communication architecture (GM global A, Global B)
    • Data acquisition instrumentation, wiring/harness
  • Good knowledge of automotive software development processes
  • Proven communication, team working and organizational talents
  • Flexibility and autonomous working required.
  • Excellent English reading and writing proficiency - Must be fluent in English
  • Must be able work and travel idependently 
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Available to travel as needed to support vehicle development activities within and outside USA: 25%
